Tips For Maintaining A Parrot
Written by MichaelZ on May 31, 2009 – 3:42 am -Parrot care can be quite simple, as long as you’re dedicated to a regular grooming routine, which is generally the most difficult part of caring for a parrot. Parrot grooming can be more difficult than you might think, as most of the concentration is on the beak, claws, and wings. Just doing your fair share of research on the proper ways to groom a parrot can help take a great deal of the burden off your shoulders the first time you try to groom your bird.
You would do well to educate yourself on the various conditions that can cause beak deformation and try to prevent this. Sometimes problems during birth can cause the parrot’s beak to grow at a weird angle, but accidents can also cause such results. Other conditions to look out for are mites and fungus, which can be found in the feathers and beak.
In order to cut a parrot’s nails you may need a kind of safety restraint. If you have not been trained at cutting your parrot’s nails including the knowledge of the correct length then do not cut them yourself! Long nails can hurt your parrot and get caught on rugs, cages and other items. You do not want your parrot to break its toe because its nails are too long.
The wings of a parrot bird need to be correctly clipped so that they do not harm themselves when flying or landing. If the wings are not clipped then your parrot may be prone to flying into things and may have very hard ground landings. When keeping a parrot you want to remember that they are not wild as the length and breadth of their wings will not make them good at finding food in the wild.
As with any other pet, you are responsible for seeing that your parrot receives a well-balanced diet. Keep in mind when selecting food for your parrot that while seeds are an excellent source of protein and fats, they can soon make your parrot overweight, as he will not get enough exercise to work off such a fatty diet. Most pet stores sell pellets which provide an excellent amount of nutrition without the excess fat.
Before buying a parrot, it is important that you understand the supplies that will be necessary for caring for a parrot, such as parrot cages, food and water bowls, and clippers for nails and wings.

A Few Concerns for Parrot Breeders
Written by MichaelZ on May 31, 2009 – 3:42 am -Unfortunately, parrots in the wild are facing extinction. The reason for these problems are due to man, we have destroyed their food supplies, the habitat, and we have captured a lots of parrots to supply the pet trade. Importing wild parrots is now illegal in both Europe and America, so if you would like a pet parrot you will have to go to one of the available parrot breeder. Although another option will be a pet store, which has been supplied by one of the breeders.
For many reasons, parrots can actually be lousy pets for some people. Two major reasons for this is they either die immediately or live a very long time. It was rumored that Winston Churchill had a parrot called Charlie which were like a trooper and was over a hundred years old. Remember, parrots are high maintenance creatures and have special needs. These birds are very smart and intelligent but unfortunately get bored easily.
This brings us to a very important issue for most modern parrot breeders. Which is, some people should not be allowed to keep parrots as pets. It’s a shame, but many parrots are unfortunately abandoned sooner or later. If you decide to be a parrot breeder, you will need to be responsible in finding a home for the babies. This means you should offer to have the baby back, if in the future the person can no longer look after it.
Some species, like the hyacinth macaw are near to extinction both in the wild and captivity, even so there are not enough homes for those in captivity. Often times people only become parrot breeders after they rescue some of these birds, then suddenly there laying eggs.
It is very clear that the parrots already in captivity need to be taken care of now. However, what about the descendents? Some parrot breeders in South America are trying to breed birds that will be able to look after themselves. The plan is to then release them back into the wild.
Also, good parrot breeders are trying to end the sales to pets stores, so they can pick the individuals they would like their baby parrots to go to.
Malc Moore has been interested in parrots many years and finds them both fascinating and joyful to be around. For more information on parrot breeders and a fascinating The Ultimate Parrot Care Guide, a book on the secrets to a happy and healthy parrot, also check out http://www.parrotcare4u.com

How You Can Train Your Cat to use a Scratching Post
Written by MichaelZ on May 30, 2009 – 10:03 am -As an owner of a cat, one of your main priorities will be to train your cat to prevent it from scratching your furniture. Not only will this save you money and a great deal of irritation, you will also have a better relationship with your cat.
There is a reason your cat scratches the furniture and you will need to understand that reason. It's not a question of your cat not having a taste for your furniture, or that your cat wants to irritate you. The simple fact is that cats love to scratch. Scratching comes naturally for cats and they need to do it. It is not diificult to train your cat to stop scratching your furniture, all you have to do is to provide a substitue for scratching.
Cats need to scratch in order to stay healthy. A cat requires scratching as it helps their muscles. The paws of a cat contain scent glands, which leaves their scent on objects that they scratch. Your cat will also scratch as a means of keeping their claws sharp and clean. Obviuosly there are reasons as to why a cat needs to scratch. Instead of preventing this type of behavior, it should be encouraged, although on your terms.
When your cat scratches your furniture, don't even think about punishing it. Cats will not respond to punishment and will increase your cats problems. If you try to punish your cat, all you will do is show the cat that you are someone who must be avoided. Even if you chase your cat away when you catch it scratching furniture, all it will do is to wait until you have gone, and then continue to ruin your furniture behind your back. The only way you can stop your cat from scratching furniture, is by the correct training.
Along with getting a cat, you should also buy a scratching post at the same time. Even better would be to have more than 1 scratching post, as this gives your cat plenty of options. Although a cat can be trained to use a scratching post at any age, the earlier you can start to train your, the better it will be for you, your cat, and especially your furniture.
You should place the scratching posts in your cat's favourite places. A great place to place a scratching post is near where your cat sleeps regularly. There is nothing better a cat likes than a good scratch and a good stretch after waking up. You could say that this is a trait that the rest of us share. Once your cat becomes used to using scratching posts, it becomes a habit, and cats are creatures of habit.
The room where everybody sits together is another great place to position a scratching post. Although cats give the impression that they are not bothered about people, they secretly love spending time with their owners. If your cat decides that it wants to use your lap for a bit of a snooze, it will be handy to have a scratching post nearby when it decides to wake up.
The only way to train your cat to use a scratching post is to make your cat familiar with it. Get your cat to scratch the post by moving a toy or piece of string up and down it. You could tie some of your pet's favourite toys onto the post, this will encourage your cat to make contact with the post with its paws. Just by using these simple methods you will easily be able to teach your cat to use the post instead of your furniture.
Ensure that the post is pretty stable and of a good length. Cat training is not difficult if you use the right methods, and it is easy to train your cat to stop it from ruining your furniture.
